The Department started since 1961 with the undergraduate classes, and was upgraded to the level of Post Graduate and Ph.D. Programme in 1984. However the laboratory was approved for Ph.D. work even when it was running graduate classes in the year 1978 with Dr. T. Singh as approved guided of the Garhwal University.
The department was initiated with Dr. P.C. Jain as Head. Successively other members namely Mr. Dhirendra Singh, Dr. R.P. Chaturvedi, Dr. S.P. Singh, Dr. S.K. Beri, Dr. Mr Bahadur, Dr. K.B. Srivastava, Dr. S.K. Gupta joined the department and they all have retired. Presently the faculty consists of Dr. S.F.Hasan, Dr (Smt.) S. Bhatnagar, Dr. N. Pemola Devi and Dr. Poonam Prabha Semwal.

Field of Ph.D./D.Phil. and other research:
The department has produced Ph.D. in the field of Environmental Science, Reproductive Biology, Toxicology, Helminthology, Lchthyology and Entomology.
More then two hundred papers have been published in the past from the department. The members of the department have published 4 books.
The department has a well equipped laboratory for undergraduate and post graduate levels and also for carrying out project and research work. We have facilities for Physiology, Environmental Biology and Microbiology. Presently the student strength is

Our alumni are well placed and serving the society. Many eminent doctor of Dehradun are our alumni. Some of them are serving as Professors, Post Graduate Trained Teachers and Scientists, serving in India and abroad.
Since 1978 projects have been sanctioned to the department. Many research projects, major and minor have been completed. Keeping in mind, due to research & teaching activities, the department has been sanctioned Post Graduate development grant thrice by the U.G.C.
The department is seen with admiration within the zoological fraternity of the University, State and abroad. The department is committed to continue good work in teaching, research and for social causes in the field of environmental protection.
